Eva Haran - Interview
Eva Haran is the definition of a designer! Funny, talented, her own unique sense and a determined attitude seen from a mile away! This interview gave me a huge insight into the world of design and I really enjoyed it! It's a super interesting read, and I hope you all love it!
What is your official title? E.g title of your course
I’m currently in my final year studying for a BA Honours Degree in Fashion Design
When did you decide you wanted to do design?
I’ve always been interested in fashion and clothes since I was a child and knew I wanted to be part of the industry, but was never quite sure which aspect until my 3rd year of secondary school. It was then I became interested in the design process and the actual construction of a garment. You told me one day that you ‘scraped pennies together to buy thread to sew’ that passion is amazing, do you think in order to be successful in this industry that you need passion and determination like that?
A figure of speech, but yes it’s definitely an expensive course! It’s tough at times and trying to find a balance in budgeting can be a struggle when alot of materials, fabric etc is involved. Passion and determination is needed 200% with a strong focus and drive and seeing a complete end result is rewarding and completely worth it.
Who is your favourite designer and why?
It varies and changes all the time but right now I’m loving Dioralop and Caitlin Price for shape and silhouette and Faustine Steinmetz for innovative techniques in texture.
What are your 5 fashion staples?
Definitely my black adidas superstar, black windbreaker from Monji, Topshop black crop top, urban outfitters high wasted jeans, & oversized Nike t-shirt/dress
How would you describe your style?
Quite casual & sporty
What is next for you?
Finishing Fourth year & get my degree for the moment! May be sticking around to earn money after that before Ill hopefully leave for London/Berlin
How did the interview go in England when I was last talking to you?
Really well, I received my internship with Helen Lawrence on the spot. I got to work with Helen in London for three months during the summer. It was amazing.
What are you’re future goals?
For now I’m definitely eager to gain more experience within the industry, possibly more in the technical/pattern drafting side Any up and coming events/projects you want to talk about?
We are currently working on our Final Year Degree collection that will be held next May in the college’s church gallery. I am currently looking at asylums and everything associated with them as my source of inspiration - quite dark but I’m very excited, only six months to go but alot of work to be done!
Last time I spoke to you, you were debuting a collection; tell us about it
That was the Mini/Two piece collection that was completed before leaving for my internship.
My inspiration was the void: basically the concept behind the two looks was the infinite expansion of the void through time, and this continuous growth and movement that is beyond our control. I was looking at how it consumes and expands from the body through both expansion and retraction.
The finished looks consisted of a dress, jumper and culottes- lots of pleating and oversized silhouettes.
Are you able to buy your clothes? If so how much, where and how?
Not yet! Completely focusing on my final year project for the rest of the year so not much time at the moment for any external production
Where do you want to be in the next ten years with your career?
I would love to say working for myself with my own label.... possibly abroad, but who knows, alot can change!
